The Male and Female Reproductive Systems
The human reproductive system consists of specialised organs that are involved in the production of gametes, transport of gametes, fertilisation and development of the offspring. The male reproductive system produces spermatozoa, while the female reproductive system produces ova and provides the environment required for fertilisation, implantation, pregnancy and childbirth.
Human reproduction involves coordinated functions of the reproductive organs, endocrine glands and reproductive hormones.
1. Male Reproductive System
The male reproductive system consists of a pair of testes, accessory ducts, accessory glands and external genitalia.
The major components are:
- Testes
- Scrotum
- Epididymis
- Vas deferens
- Ejaculatory ducts
- Urethra
- Accessory glands
- Penis
2. Testes
The testes are the primary male sex organs. They are located in the scrotum outside the abdominal cavity.
The testes perform two major functions:
- Production of male gametes or spermatozoa.
- Production of male sex hormones, mainly testosterone.
Each testis is oval in shape and is approximately 4–5 cm long and 3 cm wide. Each testis is covered by a dense connective tissue covering called the tunica albuginea.
The connective tissue partitions the testis into compartments called testicular lobules.
3. Seminiferous Tubules
Each testicular lobule contains one to three highly coiled structures called seminiferous tubules.
The seminiferous tubules are the sites of sperm production.
The walls of seminiferous tubules contain two main types of cells:
- Spermatogenic cells – develop into spermatozoa.
- Sertoli cells – provide nourishment and support to developing germ cells.
Between the seminiferous tubules are clusters of cells called interstitial cells or Leydig cells.
Leydig cells produce and secrete male sex hormones called androgens, mainly testosterone.

4. Why Are Testes Located in the Scrotum?
The testes are located outside the abdominal cavity in the scrotum because sperm production requires a temperature approximately 2–2.5°C lower than the normal internal body temperature.
इसलिए scrotum का स्थान sperm formation के लिए उपयुक्त temperature बनाए रखने में सहायता करता है। यदि testes शरीर के अंदर सामान्य body temperature पर रहें, तो normal spermatogenesis प्रभावित हो सकती है।
5. Scrotum
The scrotum is a pouch of skin and connective tissue that holds the testes outside the abdominal cavity.
It helps maintain the lower temperature required for normal sperm production.
6. Male Accessory Ducts
The accessory ducts of the male reproductive system help in the storage, maturation and transport of spermatozoa.
The major accessory ducts are:
- Rete testis
- Vasa efferentia
- Epididymis
- Vas deferens
- Ejaculatory duct
- Urethra
7. Rete Testis
The seminiferous tubules open into a network of tubules called the rete testis.
The rete testis connects the seminiferous tubules with the vasa efferentia.
8. Vasa Efferentia
The vasa efferentia arise from the rete testis and transport spermatozoa towards the epididymis.
9. Epididymis
The epididymis is a long, highly coiled tube located along the posterior surface of each testis.
It is divided into the head, body and tail regions.
Spermatozoa undergo maturation and are stored in the epididymis.
अर्थात sperm बनने के बाद तुरंत fully functional नहीं माने जाते। Epididymis में passage के दौरान sperm maturation और storage से संबंधित महत्वपूर्ण प्रक्रियाएँ होती हैं।
10. Vas Deferens
The vas deferens is a muscular duct that carries sperm from the epididymis towards the ejaculatory duct.
It passes through the inguinal canal and receives the duct of the seminal vesicle to form the ejaculatory duct.
11. Ejaculatory Duct
The ejaculatory ducts are formed by the union of the vas deferens and the duct of the seminal vesicle.
They open into the urethra.
12. Urethra
The urethra extends through the penis and serves as the common passage for urine and semen, although the two are not released simultaneously.
13. Male Accessory Glands
The male reproductive system contains three major types of accessory glands:
- A pair of seminal vesicles
- A prostate gland
- A pair of bulbourethral glands
The secretions of these glands contribute to the formation of semen.
14. Seminal Vesicles
The seminal vesicles are a pair of glands located behind the urinary bladder.
Their secretion is rich in fructose, which provides energy to spermatozoa.
15. Prostate Gland
The prostate gland is located below the urinary bladder and surrounds the upper part of the urethra.
Its secretion contributes to the seminal plasma and helps support sperm function.
16. Bulbourethral Glands
The bulbourethral glands, also called Cowper's glands, are a pair of small glands located below the prostate gland.
Their secretion helps lubricate the urethra and contributes to the fluid component of semen.
17. Semen
Semen is a whitish fluid consisting of spermatozoa suspended in seminal plasma.
Seminal plasma is formed mainly from the secretions of the accessory glands.

18. Penis
The penis is the male external genital organ. It is a copulatory organ and also provides the passage through which semen is ejaculated.
The enlarged terminal part of the penis is called the glans penis, which is covered by a fold of skin called the prepuce or foreskin.
19. Female Reproductive System
The female reproductive system consists of a pair of ovaries, a pair of oviducts, the uterus, cervix, vagina and external genitalia.
The mammary glands are also associated with the female reproductive system because they provide nourishment to the newborn after childbirth.
The major components are:
- Ovaries
- Oviducts or Fallopian tubes
- Uterus
- Cervix
- Vagina
- External genitalia

20. Ovaries
The ovaries are the primary female sex organs. They are located in the lower abdomen, one on each side of the uterus.
The ovaries perform two major functions:
- Production of female gametes or ova.
- Secretion of female sex hormones, mainly oestrogens and progesterone.
Each ovary is about 2–4 cm long and is connected to the uterus and pelvic wall by ligaments.
21. Structure of Ovary
The ovary is covered by a thin epithelium and contains an inner connective tissue called the stroma.
The stroma is differentiated into an outer cortex and an inner medulla.
The cortex contains ovarian follicles at different stages of development.
The medulla contains connective tissue, blood vessels, lymphatic vessels and nerves.
22. Ovarian Follicles
An ovarian follicle consists of an oocyte surrounded by follicular cells.
During follicular development, the follicle passes through different stages:
- Primary follicle
- Secondary follicle
- Tertiary follicle
- Graafian follicle
The mature Graafian follicle releases the secondary oocyte during ovulation.
23. Oviducts / Fallopian Tubes
Each oviduct extends from the periphery of the ovary to the uterus.
The oviduct is approximately 10–12 cm long and has three major regions:
- Infundibulum
- Ampulla
- Isthmus
24. Infundibulum
The funnel-shaped part of the oviduct near the ovary is called the infundibulum.
Its edges have finger-like projections called fimbriae.
Fimbriae help in collecting the ovulated secondary oocyte.
25. Ampulla
The ampulla is the wider part of the oviduct located between the infundibulum and isthmus.
Fertilisation normally occurs at the junction of the ampulla and isthmus, called the ampullary-isthmic junction.
26. Isthmus
The isthmus is the narrow, muscular part of the oviduct that connects the ampulla with the uterus.
27. Uterus
The uterus is a single, hollow, muscular organ where the embryo implants and develops during pregnancy.
It is commonly described as a pear-shaped organ.
The wall of the uterus consists of three layers:
- Perimetrium
- Myometrium
- Endometrium

The lower narrow part of the uterus is called the cervix.
The cavity of the cervix is called the cervical canal.
The cervical canal along with the vagina forms the birth canal.
29. Vagina
The vagina is a muscular tube that extends from the cervix to the exterior.
It acts as the female copulatory organ and also forms part of the birth canal.
30. External Genitalia
The female external genitalia are collectively called the vulva.
The major structures include:
- Mons pubis
- Labia majora

31. Mons Pubis
The mons pubis is a cushion of fatty tissue covered by skin and pubic hair. It lies over the pubic bone.
32. Labia Majora
The labia majora are the larger folds of tissue that extend from the mons pubis and surround the other external genital structures.
33. Labia Minora
The labia minora are paired folds located inside the labia majora.
34. Hymen
The hymen is a membranous fold that partially covers the vaginal opening in many females.
Its appearance varies considerably among individuals, and it may be stretched or torn by several non-sexual physical activities.
35. Clitoris
The clitoris is a small erectile structure located at the upper junction of the labia minora.
It is highly sensitive and is homologous to the penis in males.
36. Mammary Glands
The mammary glands are paired structures that contain glandular tissue and are specialised for milk production after childbirth.
Each mammary gland consists of glandular tissue containing 15–20 mammary lobes.
Each lobe contains clusters of cells called alveoli. The cells of the alveoli secrete milk.
The alveoli open into mammary tubules. These tubules join to form mammary ducts.
The mammary ducts expand to form mammary ampullae, which are connected to lactiferous ducts.
