Using definite integrals to calculate the area between a curve and the x-axis.

Area Under a Curve

The area bounded by the curve $y = f(x)$, the x-axis, and the lines $x = a$ and $x = b$ is:

$$A = \int_{a}^{b} y\,dx$$
Note: This same idea extends to finding the area between two curves.
