Classical Concept
- Oxidation — addition of oxygen or removal of hydrogen
- Reduction — removal of oxygen or addition of hydrogen
Electronic Concept
- Oxidation — loss of electrons
- Reduction — gain of electrons
Note: Oxidation and reduction always occur together, in a single redox reaction.
