Alcohols and Phenols

Two important classes of compounds built around the -OH group.

Alcohols

Compounds where an -OH group is attached to an sp³ hybridised carbon. Classified as primary, secondary, or tertiary based on the carbon it is attached to.

Phenols

Compounds where the -OH group is attached directly to an aromatic ring — phenols are notably more acidic than alcohols.
