Classification
- Haloalkanes — halogen bonded to an sp³ carbon (alkyl halides)
- Haloarenes — halogen bonded directly to an aromatic ring
Preparation
Common methods include the reaction of alcohols with hydrogen halides, and free-radical halogenation of alkanes.
