Basicity and Reactions of Amines
Why amines act as bases, and their characteristic chemical reactions.
Basicity
Amines are basic due to the lone pair of electrons on the nitrogen atom, which can accept a proton. Basicity is influenced by the electronic and steric effects of attached groups.
Reactions
Amines readily act as nucleophiles, reacting with acids to form salts and with acid chlorides to form amides.
