The Nernst Equation and Gibbs Energy

How cell potential changes with concentration, and its link to spontaneity.

Nernst Equation

The Nernst equation relates the electrode potential of a cell to the concentrations (or activities) of the species involved, allowing calculation of EMF under non-standard conditions.

Relation to Gibbs Energy

ΔG = -nFEcell

The Gibbs energy change of a cell reaction is directly related to its EMF, connecting electrochemistry to thermodynamics.
