Colligative Properties

Properties of a solution that depend only on the number of solute particles, not their identity.

Raoult's Law

The vapour pressure of a solution is proportional to the mole fraction of the solvent — the basis for understanding colligative properties.

Colligative Properties

  • Relative lowering of vapour pressure
  • Elevation of boiling point
  • Depression of freezing point
  • Osmotic pressure
Note: For solutes that dissociate or associate in solution, the Van't Hoff factor (i) corrects for the abnormal molar mass observed.
