Answering Unseen Prose Passages

A step-by-step strategy for tackling unseen factual and literary passages.

Answering Unseen Prose Passages

1. What is an Unseen Prose Passage?

  • Books and Reading (पुस्तकें और पठन)
  • Social Issues (सामाजिक समस्याएँ)
सबसे जरूरी बात: Unseen Passage में सामान्यतः passage के बाहर की knowledge की आवश्यकता नहीं होती। Answer का आधार passage में दी गई information होनी चाहिए।

2. Unseen Passage में क्या करना होता है?

एक सामान्य unseen passage question में तीन मुख्य चीजें होती हैं:

  1. Passage – एक नया गद्यांश
  2. Questions – passage से संबंधित प्रश्न
  3. Answers – passage को समझकर दिए गए उत्तर

Questions कई प्रकार के हो सकते हैं:

Question Type क्या करना है?
Direct Question Passage में दी गई information खोजनी है।
Why/How Question कारण या तरीका समझकर answer देना है।
Who/What/When/Where Specific information ढूँढनी है।
Vocabulary Word का meaning, synonym या antonym बताना है।
Reference Question Pronoun या phrase किसके लिए आया है, यह पहचानना है।
Inference Passage की information से conclusion निकालना है।
Title Passage का मुख्य विचार पहचानकर suitable title देना है।

3. Unseen Passage को कैसे पढ़ें?

Passage देखते ही हर शब्द का Hindi translation करने की कोशिश करना सही तरीका नहीं है। पहले passage का overall meaning समझने की कोशिश करें।

इसके लिए यह simple method अपनाएँ:

Step 1 – First Reading

पहली बार passage को सामान्य रूप से पढ़ें। हर difficult word पर रुकने की जरूरत नहीं है। यह समझने की कोशिश करें कि passage किस विषय पर है

अपने मन में पूछें:

  • यह passage किसके बारे में है?
  • मुख्य घटना या idea क्या है?
  • Writer क्या बताना चाहता है?

Step 2 – Second Reading

अब passage को दोबारा पढ़ें और important information को identify करें।

जैसे:

  • Names
  • Places
  • Dates
  • Reasons
  • Results
  • Important actions
  • Important facts

Step 3 – Questions पढ़ें

अब questions को ध्यान से पढ़ें। Question में दिए गए keywords को पहचानें।

उदाहरण:

Why did Ravi leave the village?

यहाँ keywords हैं:

Ravi + leave + village + Why

इसका मतलब है कि passage में Ravi के village छोड़ने का reason खोजना है।

Step 4 – Answer Locate करें

Question के keywords या उनके synonyms passage में खोजें। अक्सर answer उसी sentence में या उसके आसपास मिलेगा।

Step 5 – Answer बनाइए

सिर्फ passage की एक line copy करना हमेशा best तरीका नहीं है। जरूरत के अनुसार उस information को complete sentence में लिखें।

4. Question को देखकर कैसे सोचना है?

हर question एक clue देता है। Question के question word को पहचानना बहुत महत्वपूर्ण है।

Question Word क्या ढूँढना है?
Who? Person / व्यक्ति
What? Thing / Action / Information
When? Time / Date / Period
Where? Place / Location
Why? Reason / कारण
How? Method / Manner / तरीका
Which? Choice / Specific thing
How many? Number / संख्या
How much? Quantity / मात्रा
Golden Rule: Question में जो पूछा गया है, answer में वही देना है। Extra story लिखने की जरूरत नहीं है।

5. Keywords कैसे पहचानें?

Keyword वह important word या phrase है जो हमें passage में answer तक पहुँचने में मदद करता है।

उदाहरण:

Question: Why was the farmer unhappy?

Keywords:

farmer + unhappy + why

अब passage में farmer, unhappy या उनसे related words खोजें।

6. Exact Word हमेशा नहीं मिलता

एक important बात यह है कि question में जो word दिया है, passage में उसका exact same word जरूरी नहीं है। उसका synonym (समानार्थी शब्द) या related expression हो सकता है।

Question में Passage में हो सकता है
happy glad / pleased / joyful
unhappy sad / disappointed
start begin / commence
help assist / support
big large / huge
quick fast / rapid
buy purchase

7. Answer कैसे बनाना है?

Answer बनाते समय तीन बातों का ध्यान रखें:

  1. Question को समझें।
  2. Passage में relevant information खोजें।
  3. उसे grammatically correct sentence में लिखें।

Example

Passage: Ravi was tired because he had worked in the field throughout the day.

Question: Why was Ravi tired?

Wrong Answer: Because.

Better Answer: Ravi was tired because he had worked in the field throughout the day.

Who, What, Why, When, Where, How में क्या पूछ रहा है। फिर passage से उसी information को लेकर grammatically correct sentence बनाइए।

Answer बनाने का Basic Formula

Question → Keyword पहचानें → Passage में Information खोजें → Grammar देखें → Complete Answer बनाएं

Example 1 — Where Question

Question: Where did Sita live?

Passage: Sita lived in a small village near the river.

सोचिए: Question में Where पूछा गया है, इसलिए हमें Sita के रहने की जगह बतानी है। Passage में place है — a small village near the river.

Answer: Sita lived in a small village near the river.

Rule: Where → Place (स्थान)

Example 2 — Why Question

Question: Why did the boy run?

Passage: The boy ran because he saw a snake.

सोचिए: Question में Why है। इसलिए हमें कारण (reason) बताना है। Passage में कारण because he saw a snake है।

Answer: The boy ran because he saw a snake.

Rule: Why → Reason / Cause (कारण)

Example 3 — Who Question

Question: Who helped Ravi?

Passage: Ravi was crossing the road when his friend Mohan helped him.

सोचिए: Question में Who पूछा गया है। इसलिए हमें उस व्यक्ति का नाम बताना है जिसने Ravi की मदद की।

Answer: His friend Mohan helped Ravi.

ध्यान दें कि passage में helped him लिखा है, लेकिन answer बनाते समय him को बदलकर Ravi करना अधिक clear है।

Example 4 — What Question

Question: What did the teacher advise the students?

Passage: The teacher advised the students to work hard and remain disciplined.

सोचिए: Question में What पूछा गया है। हमें teacher की advice बतानी है।

Answer: The teacher advised the students to work hard and remain disciplined.

Example 5 — When Question

Question: When did Ramesh leave for school?

Passage: Ramesh left for school at seven o'clock in the morning.

सोचिए: When time (समय) पूछता है। Passage में time है — at seven o'clock in the morning.

Answer: Ramesh left for school at seven o'clock in the morning.

Rule: When → Time (समय)

Example 6 — How Question

Question: How did the farmer save his crops?

Passage: The farmer saved his crops by using modern irrigation methods.

सोचिए: How means तरीका (method). Passage में तरीका दिया है — by using modern irrigation methods.

Answer: The farmer saved his crops by using modern irrigation methods.

Rule: How → Method / Manner (तरीका)

Question के शुरुआत के शब्दों को पहचानना

Question Word क्या पूछता है? Answer में क्या देना है?
Who Person (व्यक्ति) किस व्यक्ति का नाम/पहचान
What Thing / Action वस्तु, काम या information
Where Place (स्थान) स्थान
When Time (समय) समय/तारीख
Why Reason (कारण) कारण
How Method / Manner तरीका या स्थिति

सबसे Important बात — केवल Keyword लिखना पर्याप्त नहीं

Question: Where did Rina go?

Passage: Rina went to the market to buy vegetables.

Wrong Answer: The market.

Better Answer: Rina went to the market.

Board examination में complete grammatical sentence लिखना अधिक सुरक्षित होता है। इसलिए केवल passage से एक शब्द उठाकर लिखने के बजाय question के अनुसार पूरा answer बनाइए।

Question के Tense को पहचानना

Question में auxiliary verb (सहायक क्रिया) देखकर tense पहचानना भी जरूरी है।

Question Structure ध्यान देने वाली बात Example
Where did... Past Where did he go?
Where does... Present Where does he live?
Where will... Future Where will he go?
Why did... Past Why did she cry?

Practice Example — Grammar बदलकर Answer बनाना

Passage: Rahul is a hardworking student. He studies for three hours every evening.

Question: How long does Rahul study every evening?

सोचिए: Question में How long duration (अवधि) पूछ रहा है। Passage में duration है — three hours.

Answer: Rahul studies for three hours every evening.

Practice Example — Pronoun को बदलना

Passage: Meena met her teacher at the school gate. She greeted him respectfully.

Question: Whom did Meena greet?

सोचिए: Whom व्यक्ति के बारे में पूछ रहा है। Passage में him लिखा है, जिसका reference teacher है।

Answer: Meena greeted her teacher respectfully.

Practice Questions

Passage: Arun lived in Patna with his parents. Every morning, he went to school by bicycle because his school was close to his house.

  1. Where did Arun live?
  2. How did Arun go to school?
  3. Why did Arun go to school by bicycle?

Answers:

  1. Arun lived in Patna with his parents.
  2. Arun went to school by bicycle.
  3. Arun went to school by bicycle because his school was close to his house.

Quick Method for Examination

  1. Question को पूरा पढ़िए।
  2. Question word पहचानिए — Who, What, Why, When, Where या How.
  3. Question के main keyword को passage में खोजिए।
  4. उस sentence को पूरा समझिए।
  5. Pronoun जैसे he, she, him, her, they आदि का reference पहचानिए।
  6. Question के tense को बनाए रखिए।
  7. Answer को complete grammatical sentence में लिखिए।
Common Mistakes:
  • सिर्फ एक शब्द में answer देना जबकि complete sentence अपेक्षित हो।
  • Question के tense को बदल देना।
  • he/him, she/her, they/them का गलत reference लेना।
  • Question में पूछे गए Why का answer केवल घटना लिखकर देना, कारण नहीं।
  • Where के answer में व्यक्ति या घटना लिख देना।
  • Passage की information को समझे बिना केवल keyword copy कर देना।
Exam Mantra:

Question को समझो → Question Word पहचानो → Passage में Answer खोजो → Grammar Check करो → Complete Sentence लिखो

One-Line Revision

Answer passage से ढूँढना है, लेकिन उसे question के grammar, tense, pronoun और meaning के अनुसार complete sentence में बनाना है।

9. Pronoun Reference Questions

कभी-कभी question पूछा जाता है:

What does “he” refer to?

या

Who does “they” refer to?

ऐसे questions में pronoun से पहले दिए गए nouns को ध्यान से देखें।

Example

Passage: Ramesh met his friend Mohan at the station. He gave Mohan a book.

यहाँ He का reference context के अनुसार Ramesh है।

Tip: Pronoun का answer guess मत कीजिए। Passage के context को देखकर identify कीजिए।

10. Vocabulary Questions

Unseen passage में vocabulary-based questions भी हो सकते हैं। जैसे:

  • Find the synonym of “happy”.
  • Find the antonym of “ancient”.
  • Give the meaning of “rapid”.
  • Find a word from the passage which means “help”.

Example

Passage: The old man was very poor, but he was extremely honest.

Question: Find the antonym of “dishonest” from the passage.

Answer: Honest

11. Synonym और Antonym कैसे खोजें?

सबसे पहले question में दिए गए word का meaning समझें। फिर passage में उसी meaning वाला या opposite meaning वाला word खोजें।

Word Synonym Antonym
Brave Courageous Cowardly
Easy Simple Difficult
Ancient Old Modern
Begin Start End
Rich Wealthy Poor

12. Main Idea

13. Suitable Title कैसे बनाएं?

Title passage के central idea को represent करना चाहिए। Title बहुत बड़ा sentence नहीं होना चाहिए।

Example:

यदि passage पेड़ों के महत्व और उन्हें बचाने के बारे में है, तो suitable titles हो सकते हैं:

  • Importance of Trees
  • Save Trees
  • Our Green Friends
Rule: अच्छा title छोटा, relevant और passage के मुख्य विचार से जुड़ा होना चाहिए।

14. Inference Questions

Inference का अर्थ है passage में दी गई information से logical conclusion (तार्किक निष्कर्ष) निकालना। Answer हमेशा उसी exact sentence में नहीं लिखा होता।

Example

Passage: Rina carried an umbrella and wore a raincoat while going to school.

Question: What can you infer about the weather?

Answer: It was probably raining or likely to rain.

यह answer passage के clues से निकाला गया है।

15. True / False Questions

यदि statement दी गई हो, तो उसे passage से compare करें। अपनी personal knowledge के आधार पर answer न दें।

Example

Passage: The school library opens at 8 a.m. and closes at 4 p.m.

Statement: The library opens at 9 a.m.

Answer: False

क्योंकि passage के अनुसार library 8 a.m. पर खुलती है।

16. Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)

MCQ में पहले question पढ़ें, फिर passage में relevant line खोजें। सभी options को देखकर जल्दबाजी में answer न चुनें।

Example

Passage: Trees provide oxygen and help to keep the environment clean.

Question: What do trees provide?

  • A. Water
  • B. Oxygen
  • C. Food only
  • D. Electricity

Answer: B. Oxygen

17. सबसे Common Mistakes

Mistake

18. The Best Strategy — Read, Locate, Understand, Answer

Unseen Passage के लिए यह चार-step formula याद रखें:

READ → LOCATE → UNDERSTAND → ANSWER

  • READ: Passage को ध्यान से पढ़ें।
  • LOCATE: Question से संबंधित information खोजें।
  • UNDERSTAND: उस information का सही meaning समझें।
  • ANSWER: Simple और correct English में answer लिखें।
