Electric Dipole and Gauss's Law

A pair of opposite charges, and a powerful shortcut for calculating electric fields with symmetry.

Electric Dipole

An electric dipole consists of two equal and opposite charges separated by a small distance. It experiences a torque when placed in a uniform electric field.

Gauss's Law

The total electric flux through a closed surface is proportional to the total charge enclosed within it. This law makes it easy to calculate the electric field for highly symmetric charge distributions.
