Energy in SHM and Damped Oscillations

How energy shifts between kinetic and potential forms during oscillation, and what happens when friction is present.

Energy in SHM

During SHM, energy continuously converts between kinetic energy (maximum at the equilibrium point) and potential energy (maximum at the extremes), while the total mechanical energy stays constant.

Damped and Forced Oscillations

  • Damped Oscillations — amplitude gradually decreases due to resistive forces like friction
  • Forced Oscillations — an external periodic force drives the oscillation; at resonance, the amplitude becomes very large
