Superposition of Waves and Standing Waves
What happens when two or more waves meet, and how musical instruments produce specific notes.
Principle of Superposition
When two or more waves overlap, the resultant displacement at any point is the sum of the displacements each wave would cause individually.
Standing Waves
When two identical waves travel in opposite directions (e.g. a wave and its reflection), they can combine to form a standing wave — a pattern with fixed points of no motion (nodes) and points of maximum motion (antinodes). This is the basis of sound production in instruments like a sonometer.
