Significant Figures, Errors and Dimensional Analysis
How precisely we can measure something, and a powerful trick for checking equations.
Significant Figures, Errors and Dimensional Analysis
1. Significant Figures
3 Significant Figures
Rules for Significant Figures
Rule 1: All Non-Zero Digits are Significant
123 → 3 Significant Figures
4567 → 4 Significant Figures
Rule 2: Zeros Between Non-Zero Digits are Significant
1002 → 4 Significant Figures
2.05 → 3 Significant Figures
10.01 → 4 Significant Figures
Rule 3: Leading Zeros are Not Significant
0.0052 → 2 Significant Figures
0.00045 → 2 Significant Figures
Rule 4: Trailing Zeros in Decimal Numbers are Significant
2.500 → 4 Significant Figures
4.20 → 3 Significant Figures
0.0400 → 3 Significant Figures
Rule 5: Trailing Zeros Without Decimal Point
1500 = 1.5 × 10³ → 2 Significant Figures
1500 = 1.50 × 10³ → 3 Significant Figures
1500 = 1.500 × 10³ → 4 Significant Figures
Significant Figures in Scientific Notation
Scientific notation significant figures
6.02 × 10²³ → 3 Significant Figures
1.230 × 10⁵ → 4 Significant Figures
5.0 × 10⁻³ → 2 Significant Figures
Rounding Off Rules
Case 1: Next Digit Less Than 5
Answer = 3.14
Case 2: Next Digit Greater Than 5
Answer = 3.15
Case 3: Next Digit is Exactly 5
Significant Figures in Addition and Subtraction
Final Answer = 15.3
Significant Figures in Multiplication and Division
2.5 × 3.42
2.5 → 2 Significant Figures
3.42 → 3 Significant Figures
Calculation:
2.5 × 3.42 = 8.55
Final Answer = 8.6
2. Errors in Measurement
Error = Measured Value − True Value
Types of Errors
- Systematic Errors
- Random Errors
- Instrumental Errors
- Personal Errors
1. Systematic Errors
Possible causes:
- Faulty instrument
- Incorrect calibration
- Zero error
- Environmental conditions
- Incorrect observation method
2. Random Errors
- Environmental changes
- Instrument limitations
- Human reaction time
3. Instrumental Errors
4. Personal Errors
Parallax Error
Absolute Error
Absolute Error = |Measured Value − True Value|
Mean Absolute Error
Mean Absolute Error
= Sum of Absolute Errors / Number of Observations
Relative Error
Relative Error
= Absolute Error / Measured Value
Percentage Error
Percentage Error
= Relative Error × 100%
Percentage Error
= (Absolute Error / Measured Value) × 100%
Example: Percentage Error
Percentage Error
= (0.2 / 10) × 100
= 2%
Combination of Errors
Error in Addition and Subtraction
ΔZ = ΔA + ΔB
- ΔZ = Result में absolute error
- ΔA = A में absolute error
- ΔB = B में absolute error
Error in Multiplication and Division
ΔZ / Z
= ΔA / A + ΔB / B
Error in Power
Z = Aⁿ
तो fractional error approximately होगा:
ΔZ / Z = n (ΔA / A)
Percentage error
Percentage Error in Z
= n × Percentage Error in A
3. Dimensions of Physical Quantities
- Mass → M
- Length → L
- Time → T
Dimensional Formula
General form:
[Mᵃ Lᵇ Tᶜ]
- M → Mass
- L → Length
- T → Time
- a, b, c → Powers of fundamental quantities
Dimensions of Some Important Quantities
| Physical Quantity | Formula | Dimensional Formula |
|---|---|---|
| Velocity | Displacement / Time | [M⁰L¹T⁻¹] |
| Acceleration | Velocity / Time | [M⁰L¹T⁻²] |
| Force | Mass × Acceleration | [MLT⁻²] |
| Momentum | Mass × Velocity | [MLT⁻¹] |
| Work | Force × Distance | [ML²T⁻²] |
| Energy | Work | [ML²T⁻²] |
| Power | Work / Time | [ML²T⁻³] |
| Pressure | Force / Area | [ML⁻¹T⁻²] |
| Density | Mass / Volume | [ML⁻³] |
| Frequency | 1 / Time | [M⁰L⁰T⁻¹] |
Example: Dimensional Formula of Force
Force = Mass × Acceleration
अब:
[Mass] = [M]
[Acceleration] = [LT⁻²]
[Force]
= [M] × [LT⁻²]
= [MLT⁻²]
Example: Dimensional Formula of Work
Work = Force × Distance
[Work]
= [MLT⁻²] × [L]
= [ML²T⁻²]
Principle of Dimensional Homogeneity
इसे Principle of Dimensional Homogeneity कहते हैं।
v = u + at
[v] = [LT⁻¹]
[u] = [LT⁻¹]
[at] = [LT⁻²] × [T]
= [LT⁻¹]
Dimensional Analysis
Uses of Dimensional Analysis
Dimensional Analysis
Checking Correctness of an Equation
Consider:
s = ut + ½at²
अब dimensions देखें:
[s] = [L]
[ut] = [LT⁻¹] × [T]
= [L]
[at²] = [LT⁻²] × [T²]
= [L]
Limitations of Dimensional Analysis
Dimensionless Quantities
Examples:
- Strain
- Relative Density
- Refractive Index
- Angle (radian measure में)
इनका dimensional formula:
[M⁰L⁰T⁰]
Important Formulae
Absolute Error
= |Measured Value − True Value|
Relative Error
= Absolute Error / Measured Value
Percentage Error
= (Absolute Error / Measured Value) × 100%
For Addition/Subtraction:
ΔZ = ΔA + ΔB
For Multiplication/Division:
ΔZ/Z = ΔA/A + ΔB/B
For Power:
If Z = Aⁿ
Then:
ΔZ/Z = n(ΔA/A)
